Your Venture's Unfair Advantage (23A)

Resources:

1. Connections with others in the industry
V: This is valuable because I have experience working in the industry and understanding the pros and cons of this type of business
R: This resource is rare because you have to be introduced to them somehow and it is difficult to make this many connections
I: This resource is imitable but it is very difficult to obtain without a connection
N: There is no way to substitute for these connections.

2. Understanding of current market pricing
V: This is valuable because you have to understand the market pricing to be able to competitively price your product.
R: This resource is not rare for others in the industry as it is necessary, but may be rare for people who are not in the industry.
I: This resource is imitable because you just have to study the market pricing to be able to understand it. However, a lot of this information is not public.
N: A substitute for understanding the current market price would just be trying prices and finding one that works.

3. Ability to relate to consumer's wishes
V: This resource is valuable because it helps me find what customers do and do not want to spend their money on
R: This resource is rare because a lot of bigger companies lose touch with what their consumer base actually needs
I: This resource is not imitable because you need to have a true understanding of the consumer, and you can't fake it until you make it
N: This resource is non-substitutable because without this understanding there is no way to know what the important features of your product are without guessing

4. General knowledge of trends in the market
V: This is valuable because if you understand what games or consoles will be big news then it will allow you to know what consumers will want
R: This is not rare as many people in the industry keep up with this news
I: This is imitable because a provider could easily begin following news in the industry
N: This knowledge is substitutable because if you have a lot of money you can choose to just offer everything and work at a loss, rather than learning the trends

5. Ambition to turn this product into a reality
V: This is valuable because it will allow me to see things differently from big companies who may see this as just another venture.
R: This is rare because most companies are working to make a profit and do not get very invested anything other than success/failure
I: This is not imitable because you cannot imitate someone's desires
N: This knowledge is substitutable because it is not technically necessary to run a successful company

6. Basic understanding of how to form a business in the state of Florida
V: This is valuable because it will help me easily understand the steps needed to form the company
R: This is not rare because it is necessary, though it is probably rare for people who have not previously had experience
I: This is imitable because you can easily learn the process online
N: This knowledge is substitutable because you could technically pay someone with this knowledge to assist you in creating your company

7. Information about the competition and the current status of their company
V: This is valuable because it will help me to make decisions about my own company
R: This is rare because only someone who has had connections with those companies will have this knowledge
I: This is not imitable unless you were able to gain those connections before entering the business, as this is not information that the companies would give to someone in the industry
N: This is not substitutable because even if you have money or a developed company this information is useful

8. Knowledge of where I am capable of undercutting opponents
V: This is valuable because I am able to spot what resources may not necessarily be desired by consumers and cut prices in that way, this will help me win against the competition
R: This is not rare because many companies seek to do this
I: This is imitable because if you know the status of your company vs others you are able to see where you can save money
N: This is substitutable because it is not necessary to undercut opponents to make a profit (think Gucci)

9. Connections with companies who may be interested in sponsoring me
V: This is valuable because it will help me save money
R: This is rare because not many people have these connections established
I: This is not imitable because you cannot imitate my connections completely, though they may be able to achieve some of them
N: This is substitutable because if you have enough money you may not need these connections or sponsorships

10. Connections with businesses that may be willing to advertise my company
V: This is valuable because it will help my company get off the ground
R: This is rare because not many people have this many connections right off the bat
I: This is not imitable because they would have to be able to replicate all of the connections I've made and that is difficult to do
N: This is not substitutable because you can pay others to advertisements but some of the companies would do it to me just as a favor for how I've helped them

Top resource:

I believe that my top resource is my connections with businesses that may be willing to advertise my company. I believe that this is my top resource over all the other resources because it is hard to imitate, rare, valuable, and cannot be substituted even in some cases even if someone tried to. These connections are life-long and very useful for me. Big companies like Walmart are unable to have these connections and even if they paid for them they still could not guarantee approval from them.

  1. Kelsey,
I think your layout for this post is very effective and was easy to read. Out of the resources you listed, I agree with you that your top resource is connections with businesses that will advertise your company. One piece of advice I can give you is next time have your resources more specific and something only you have. I feel some of the ones you listed are very general and a lot of people would say.

  2. Hey Kelsey,
I'm going to have to disagree with Alex on this one, I really did not like the layout for this particular assignment, I feel like I kept losing my place in the text by having to move my eyes back over to the beginning of the list. Simple bullet points would be much better. Besides that you did a good job responding to the prompt and successfully covered every point. I also agree with you that connections are a very important resource and make a good top resource in this case. Good job!
