My Entrepreneurship Story

In my life, I have been exposed to entrepreneurship many times but I mainly wanted to share two stories that really interest me. Both of these stories began before I was even born!

My Father
As a kid, I had the pleasure of telling everyone that my Dad owned his own business. The story behind it is actually really interesting because it inspires me to not get set on one specific, linear plan for my own life. My father started out as an undergraduate double majoring biology and physics. After he finished his undergraduate degree, he decided to apply to graduate school for an MBA. After traveling and working for many different companies, he thought, "Hey I could do that!" and decided to open up his own business. I am very proud of him because he decided to take a chance and it paid off because he was able to become his own boss.

My Nanna
My Nanna, not my Grandma, has always been in my life ever since I was a little child. It wasn't until I was older that I learned she had the ultimate rags-to-riches story! She was born and raised in Canada on a farm with a ton of brothers and sisters. Eventually, she made her way to the United States and when her husband was diagnosed with ALS she turned a rental property into an adult home. This allowed her to pay the bills for her two children and eventually go to school to become a nurse. Through the years, she eventually became the first woman from New York to receive a loan for a nursing home with only her name on the application! Her story is so interesting that she even ended up writing a book. While I could only hope to be as successful as her some day, her story is one-in-a-million.

Why I enrolled in ENT 3003
Before I decided to attend the University of Florida, I planned on using the money that would go towards tuition to open up a restaurant and arcade. Unfortunately, my parents weren't a big fan of that idea! Although my major has nothing to do with business, I haven't yet let go of that dream and I hope that one day I will be able to make it happen. I hope that this class will let me set up a plan for how to achieve my goals. While a main concern for me is money, I know that it is important to know what you are doing when you open up a business. I am hoping that I can learn some of the basics that I will need to know. I personally am very interested in the most important steps to take when beginning to open up a business. I would also love to learn whether or not some of the things that I have been told about opening a business are true or not. I hope that this class allows me to take that first step in achieving my goal.

  1. That is a very interesting story about your nana. I can see why it is one of your favorite stories and why you find it so inspiring. It is quite the accomplishment to be the first woman to receive a loan for a nursing home in New York. Your nana must be an amazing person to talk to with a lot of stories.
Your dream of opening up a restaurant and arcade seems like an interesting combination for a business. I am just wondering what your target market is? Would it be youths like Chuck E Cheese or adults like Dave n Busters?

  2. Hi Kelsey, it is so cool to see how prominent entrepreneurship is in your family. Your Nanna story is really interesting and I am sure inspiring to you. I also love that you have an entrepreneurship dream of your own. I hope everything works out and you can follow in your father's and nanna's footsteps and become an entrepreneur yourself. Great post and I can't wait to go to your restaurant/arcade someday!
